Drawing / Writing: A Co-Respondence
Laura Harris & Elise Ashby
This piece is a collaboration between Edinburgh-based artist Elise Ashby and Liverpool-based writer Laura Harris exploring the borderlands of drawing and writing. It asks how writing can represent the act of drawing and whether a drawing exceeds what can be said of it. Ashby's practice is informed by phenomenology and she aims to draw as a body within an environment. This was the starting point for Harris' exploration of her work, which Ashby then responded to with her pencil. The text contains traces of revisions, much like a sketch, with refrains returned to and rephrased. Rather than a critic writing about drawing, this piece is an attempt to write critically with drawing, producing something which hovers between the two practices.
